This is not my first business. I used to run an online beauty e-commerce store from 2015- to 2017. And I did everything myself. I literally did everything from shipping and handling to marketing the inventory. I got burned out, and I closed my business, and I was like, “The next time, if I start a new business, I need a team. “
A few years later, I fell in love with SEO. I went from just running and doing things on my own to opening to the possibility of helping small businesses with SEO consulting and services.
The second time around, as I really got serious with the SEO business towards the end of 2020, I realized that I was pregnant. Early on, I saw how exhausted I was in my pregnancy. As soon as I got pregnant, I knew that something would have to give, like I would have to hire more people. I’d already had one content writer, and I knew how many moving parts are to SEO. I was going to need a team. So when I saw Grindaholics Anonymous, it was a no-brainer; I knew the program was exactly what I needed this time around.
I was still working my 9 – 5 and running my SEO business, and I wanted to take maternity leave. I felt like I did not work this hard to get to this point in my career not to be able to really be on maternity leave. I knew there was no way in hell I would be able to grow my business without a team, work a nine to five with the new baby while being a wife, no ma’am.
There were three things from the program that helped me.
The CEO task analysis was my absolute favorite. I listed over 100 tasks, which was eye-opening because we do as CEOs without realizing how much we do to run our businesses. Whenever I create a new job description, I still go back to that task analysis because I already know what I need someone to do. I’ve gotten so many compliments on my job descriptions because they’re so detailed, and I can explain the role and what I need from someone in the position.
The other tools that helped me a lot were the CEO Vision and org chart.
Understanding you’re not just hiring for the next couple of months of the year, you’re hiring to fulfill your five-year vision of where do you want your company to go.
When I did that chart, a lightbulb went off for me. This looks like a real business like it was a real company that I’m building out here.
Also, the job description template was really good. Like it just organized all my thoughts so I could clearly state this is my company and this is what I’m looking for. If you know, these are the roles; these are the must-haves. Just understanding how to put together and put together a quality job description made all the difference. Even my client relationship manager was like, “Your application was really good,” and she runs a whole VA business.
Some of the biggest changes I’ve experienced from joining the program have been things getting done without me having to put a single hand on it. I loved that. I leaned into building my backend system more, using tools like Click up to handle client work and management with my client relationship manager.
Things get assigned at the beginning of the month; it gets done and submitted. I don’t have to think about it; I do my review.
Another huge thing is my client onboard them understanding that I am not going here with them every day, all day, like on this project, like I have a team. So I started using the term “my team and I” or ” my team will reach out and do this” to set those clear boundaries with my clients.
I came into the program with a clear vision. I wasn’t struggling with mindset; I just needed the tools and the strategy to execute.
I’m spending less time on busy tasks and more time on strategy and outlining that for my clients. I’m doing better at delegating and outsourcing tasks.
