Are you aware of your team’s Love Languages?

Leadership is rooted in the power of effective communication, comprehending, and responding to people’s needs. Every individual is unique and has their own emotional needs that must be fulfilled to remain emotionally stable, motivated, and satisfied. Over the years, the concept of “love languages” has been widely accepted as a way of understanding and expressing our needs, but have you ever considered that the same might also apply to how we communicate and interact with our team members?

Yes, I know what you’re thinking! And no, physical touch is NOT on the list! However, from the 5 love languages Dr. Gary Chapman created, we can use a few to create a list of our own to help make deeper connections and cultivate more trust in our teams. 

While love languages may seem relevant only to personal relationships, they also have a tremendous impact on leadership. Understanding the needs of our team is key to being an effective leader, and utilizing love languages is a great way to inspire and motivate our team members to be their best.

Quality Time: Workplace Bonding

• Creating a day specifically for team bonding
• Scheduling Happy Hours after work
• Finding new and exciting events that the team can bring their families to

Words of Affirmation: Feedback + Mentorship 

What does giving words of affirmation look like in the workplace?

• Telling your team member, they did an excellent job after a project
• Expressing to your team how much you appreciate their effort and support
• Praising your teammate for new ideas they bring to the table 

Receiving Gifts: New Opportunities + Challenges

What can receiving gifts time look like in the workplace?

• Allowing your teammate to take the lead on a new project
• Allowing them to be a mentor to a newer teammate 
• Working together to build new goals and milestones along with rewards for meeting those targets

Acts of Service: Support

What can acts of service look like in the workplace?

• Providing assistance or resources to a teammate who seems to be overwhelmed/overworked
• Asking to help relieve some work off of someone who is overwhelmed when you have free space available or providing accommodations for them
• Buy lunch for the day if your team is stressed and feeling overwhelmed.

When we begin to see work and life holistically, it will be easier for us to start making these simple connections sooner. At the end of the day, humans will be human no matter where they go, meaning how we interact with humans outside of the workplace regarding building meaningful and effective connections can also apply in the workplace.
